Technology: A help or a hindrance to education?

Finding someone on twitter who was studying the same topic that I was proved to be a pretty difficult task when I first searched the internet for a person to follow. My question “Is the technology we have today making us stupider?”, is a pretty broad topic. It was difficult to find someone that was specifically studying just this question, but I was able to find someone who was in the technology field who looks at how technology effects people. The person I found to follow who is researching a similar topic to me is named Matt Harris. Matt Harris is an international educator who spends the majority of his time and research on educational technology. His twitter is full of links to articles, written by him, that exam different technologies and how they shape the world and the people using them. I found him through an interview conducted where he was the interviewee. The article/interview examined how technology has changed the way in which we learn. The article looked at the positive effects that technology has had in the world of education, which is half of what I am researching for project two. Harris looks at how technology has improved education and learning over the years, which I need more of in my paper. Though I had not done any research on this topic prior to project two, I feel like I sort of went in with the idea that the way in which technology was being used by many people, specifically young high school and college aged people, was definitely hindering learning in society today. I had the idea in my head that students were no longer opening books and instead opening a google page to find the quick answer to any question that they have without actually putting in the work to search for the answer through reading a chapter or looking through a power point, which is how students can absorb knowledge, not by googling and immediately finding an answer. I feel that I can learn from Harris’s approach to the topic. He examines how different technologies can aid in the process of learning and have made classrooms more interactive and engaging for students as well as looking at how the internet being more accessible can increase learning. I have to come into this project without a preconceived notion of what I think is the truth. I have to look at the topic from both sides because my question may not have just one answer, but a combination depending on how technology is being used.
